Mr. Hoo Nun's room
Nurse
Yoder handed Mr. Hoo Nun the two notebooks and with a “Thank
you” and she started her routine by taking his blood pressure.
Neither
of them said anything for a moment and then Mr. Hoo Nun cleared his
throat. “Well, did you
read them?”
“Oh,
uh, yes. They’re good.
Very interesting.”
“I’m
glad you liked it.” He
smiled. “Can you tell me
more?”
“Well,”
she stopped and looked up. “I do have some questions.”
He
smiled and held out his hand. “Ask then. I
have no where to go.”
“First
of all, I usually don’t read this kind of fiction so I might
not....”
“Oh,”
his expression fell. “This
is not fiction.”
“Right.
Anyway, what does this have
to do with earth history? I
mean, you said if I read this story I would understand my history
better.”
He
shook his head. “No.
I said if I tell you the history of my world, then you will
understand your own world better. Two
notebooks do not make a world history.”

“Ok,
then, just tell me one thing: is Araknik a Firesmyth or a rogue?”
She started dispensing his medicines.
“A
rogue?”
“He
knows the lost arts, doesn’t he?” she asked.
He nodded. “Then
doesn’t that make him one of them?”
“Not
necessarily, no. You see
there were a few of the aristocracy that knew the lost arts.
And he was old, very old, so he would have his own memory to rely
on. It would not be a thing
handed down to him in tradition.”
She
looked up at the wall behind him thinking and added a long drawn out
“Oh.”
“Your
answers are here,” he said patting the remaining notebooks.
“Read the rest. It
tells more about Araknik.”
“Alright.”
She took the next two. “I
can only read a little right now. I’m
taking a class at the university.”
She
headed for the door and he sat up asking, “What are you studying?”
She kept
walking and said looking back, “Archeology.”
